[The Fire and the Stones]
The centerpiece of this installation is a large volcanic rock (tezontle) from the Xaltepec volcano in the Santa Catarina Mountain Range that contrasts with large sheets of glass that served as mediums for reflect- ing on the Earth’s temporality, in which humans are just here for an instant. On one of the glass sheets, Cuevas wrote verses from the book Animal Concert (1999) by Blanca Varela: “I will be survived by needle glass stone / busy ants / I will be survived by them.” On other glass sheets are the phrases “Run fast, bite hard” and “Migration is natural,” in reference to the defense against the aggressive speed of capitalism and natural evolution discourse.
