[Bioremediation Project]
In response to an invitation to participate in the exhibition “Residual” and create projects that could have a real impact on Mexico City’s garbage prob- lem, Cuevas considered the possibility of cultivating bacteria to destroy plastics. She invited researchers from UNAM’s Institute of Geology to conduct an initial study focused on the microorganisms found in the city’s largest landfill (Bordo Poniente). Samples of plastic materials were taken and isolated for laboratory analysis, and electron microscopy made it possible to verify how the bacteria acted on this material. The different stages of the research, residues, and a shaking incubator with bacterial colonies were exhibited. In addition, the research methodology and Dr. Loza’s publication in the October 2007 issue of the American Society for Microbiology’s journal Applied and Environmental Microbiology were made available to the public.
