The quote on this poster is from the book The General Idea of the Revolution in the Nineteenth Century (1851), by French theorist Pierre-Joseph Proudhon. Despite its temporal distance, Cuevas brings the quote to the present to show us how valid it continues to be in our everyday life as people are subjected to mechanisms ranging from surveillance cameras in the streets to government institutions accessing their personal information. The poster’s background colors remind us of those that tend to be used in flags and political party propaganda. The work distances us from the abstract idea of the system by showing us its concrete presence in the control it exerts over multiple aspects of our lives on a daily basis.
