Free access to communication technologies has been a constant in Cuevas’ work. Based on her knowledge about the possibilities of creating an autonomous cellular telephone network, the artist began initial testing to install networks that were not dependent on those of corporate providers; she did this first on islands in Finland and then in Germany. Later, this technology was adopted by indigenous communities in the Mexican state of Oaxaca, where there was no access to cell phone networks, achieving the social adoption of this means of communication, not only for long-distance calls but also for networks of affection and cooperation
