[Concert for Lavapiés]
For this public artwork, the artist distributed flyers throughout neighborhoods with immigrant populations in Madrid’s Lavapiés neighborhood to convene street musicians to perform a concert there. Cuevas organized the encounter so the musicians would gather for half an hour to play their usual musical genres—samba, classical music, punk, rock—simul taneously. Without prior rehearsal or direction, an orchestral noise was expected. However, the result was a harmonious concert, which lasted for an hour, as well as an exercise in communicating without words. Some of the neighborhood’s residents even came out to dance and watch the event. Two years later, some of these musicians have met again on their own initiative to play together.
